Breaking Free from the Hamster Wheel: Insights from 2024 DisruptHR Buffalo Event

On April 11th, 2024 StaffBuffalo partnered with DisruptHR Buffalo for an engaging evening of networking at Hofbräuhaus Buffalo. The DisruptHR event is designed to energize, inform, and empower business leaders and HR professionals. This fast-paced, entertaining format features local experts delivering concise, impactful presentations, each lasting just 5 minutes. It is fast-paced, entertaining, and lots of fun!

Business leaders from across the world presented a variety of topics that are disrupting workplaces everywhere! In addition to presenting disruptive ideas, they also shared innovative HR practices that enhance employee experiences by adding real value to businesses.

StaffBuffalo’s Talent Optimization Strategist, Carolyn Case presented a powerful 5-minute talk titled “Enjoying your Hamster Wheel? How Algorithms are Playing You!” In her presentation, Carolyn argued that job sites, like dating sites, use algorithms to match people based on keywords, but this approach often falls short. When qualified candidates or potential dates are scarce, these sites recommend increasing the budget to expand the candidate pool. This might lead to more candidates...but they are less suitable, and now you must take more time vetting. It is a hamster wheel: working harder without making progress. To break free from the dreaded hamster wheel, Carolyn suggested ditching the algorithms and instead leveraging professional networks and outsourcing the hiring process – like to a matchmaker or recruiter! Increase your people time, and decrease your time being played by algorithms.

With several hundred people in attendance and participating, the event demonstrated the power of collaboration and knowledge sharing in advancing the field of HR. When we spend time together sharing our ideas and networks, we foster a stronger, more connected community of professionals.
