Updated USCIS Form I-9: Stay Informed and Compliant!

Stay ahead of the latest regulatory changes with USCIS's revised Form I-9, now available since August 1, 2023. These updates bring increased convenience, efficiency, and compliance for employers like you.

Key Revisions:

  1. Streamlined Format: Sections 1 and 2 now fit on a single sheet, optimized for tablets and mobile devices.

  2. Improved Accessibility: The Preparer/Translator Certification and Reverification/Rehire Certification sections are now on separate sheets, enhancing clarity and ease of use.

  3. Document Acceptance: The Lists of Acceptable Documents page has been expanded to include acceptable receipts for lost, stolen, or damaged documents, along with guidance on employment authorization document extensions.

  4. Simplified Instructions: The Form Instructions have been condensed to 8 pages from the previous 15, making navigation straightforward.

  5. Remote Verification Option: A new checkbox allows employers to indicate remote examination under DHS-authorized procedures, enhancing flexibility in document review.

Transition Timeline - You have two options for implementation:

  • Continue using the previous Form I-9 (expiring on 10/31/2022) until October 31, 2023.

  • Start using the revised Form I-9 (expiring on 07/31/2026) immediately.

However, by November 1, 2023, all employers must exclusively use the revised Form I-9. Discover the revised form here.

Stay Mindful:

  • While the alternative procedure offers convenience, employees can opt for in-person verification if preferred.

  • COVID-19-related flexibilities continue until August 30, 2023, enabling alternative document review for employees hired between 03/20/2020 and 07/31/2023
