Painting a New Path: The Story of Danielle Bickle and Strokes Painting

By: Hilario Caro, Talent Optimization at StaffBuffalo

In this inspiring episode of the Pain Points Podcast, Lauren Lewis sits down with Danielle Bickle, founder and owner of Strokes Painting & Contracting, to talk about entrepreneurship, resilience, and what it means to bring pride back to the trades. From starting her business during the pandemic to building a growing team of painters across Western New York, Danielle’s story is one of vision, authenticity, and community.

From Corporate Career to Construction Boss
Danielle’s path to entrepreneurship started in an unexpected place: corporate sales. After years in the corporate world—and a lifetime around construction through her father’s and husband’s influence—she realized it was time to build something of her own. “There’s no better time than when the world shuts down to jump off a cliff and build a parachute on the way down,” she said, recalling how the uncertainty of the pandemic inspired her to take a bold leap.

What began as a simple idea quickly turned into a thriving business. Today, Strokes Painting & Contracting serves residential and commercial clients across Western New York and Rochester, blending professional craftsmanship with personality, transparency, and heart.

A Brand Built on Nostalgia and Trust
The name Strokes was inspired by Danielle’s late father-in-law, who once ran a small painting business under the same name in Arizona. Reimagining it for a new generation, Danielle wanted the brand to feel both nostalgic and fresh—something that evoked trust, color, and comfort. “Our logo is a nod to that ‘Reading Rainbow’ energy,” she laughed. “It’s playful and familiar, but professional. We want clients to feel connected and at ease the moment they see it.”

From day one, Danielle has leaned into authenticity as her marketing strategy—sharing every win, challenge, and behind-the-scenes moment with full transparency on social media. “I wanted people to feel like they were part of our journey,” she explained. “It’s built this incredible network of supporters who cheer for our success.”

Breaking Stereotypes and Building Culture
Danielle is determined to change perceptions of the trades—especially painting. “People think painting isn’t a skilled trade because there’s no certification,” she said. “But our crews are highly trained, OSHA-certified, and lead-safe. We take pride in what we do—and pay our people like the professionals they are.”

Her company has grown to over 18 employees and 14 active crews, including several women painters. “I’ve made a concerted effort to hire women,” she said proudly. “They bring incredible skill and perspective to the work.”

Culture is the cornerstone of Strokes. Danielle fosters a team-first environment that prioritizes support, growth, and well-being. From retirement plans with a 3% company match to 40 hours of PTO and even paid birthdays off, her approach is redefining what it means to work in the trades. “We hire for opportunity, not desperation,” she emphasized. “When you invest in people, they stay—and they thrive.”

Transparency, Quality, and Trust
Strokes Painting stands out in a crowded industry by offering something rare: honesty. Each client receives a clear, itemized proposal outlining every product, price, and process—no hidden costs, no surprises. “We’re not trying to be the cheapest option,” Danielle said. “We’re here to be the right one.”

The company’s work ranges from interior and exterior home painting to large-scale commercial projects—including Six Flags Darien Lake, one of their earliest clients. Their crews also specialize in wallpaper installation, stucco and EIFS repairs, and high-end finishes, all performed with professionalism and care.

Family, Flexibility, and the Future
For Danielle, success isn’t just about growth—it’s about balance. After years of running the business from her kitchen table, she recently opened a dedicated shop and office on Transit Road in East Amherst, allowing her to separate work and family life for the first time. “Being able to leave my computer at work and be present with my family has been life-changing,” she shared.

As Strokes continues to expand across Western New York and Rochester, Danielle’s vision remains clear: to build a brand synonymous with trust, craftsmanship, and community. “When you think of painters in Western New York, I want you to think of Strokes,” she said. “Invite us to the party—that’s all I ask.”

At StaffBuffalo, we celebrate entrepreneurs like Danielle who lead with grit, integrity, and heart. Just as Strokes Painting adds color and confidence to every space, we help organizations and professionals build brighter futures—one connection at a time.
