Some leaders focus on growth. Others focus on results. Patti Stephen has spent nearly two decades focused on people.
On this episode of the Pain Points Podcast, Lauren Lewis sits down with Patti Stephen, President of Buffalo Prep and CEO & Co-Founder of C3 Community, to discuss leadership, educational equity, positive psychology, workplace well-being, and the power of helping people feel valued.
From her early days as a part-time employee at Buffalo Prep to leading one of Western New York’s most impactful nonprofit organizations, Patti shares a journey centered on connection, kindness, and creating environments where people can thrive.
From A Part-Time Role To Transformational Leadership
When Patti joined Buffalo Prep 17 years ago, she never imagined where the journey would lead.
Starting as a part-time special events coordinator funded through a grant, she quickly found herself drawn to the organization's mission and the scholars it serves. Over time, she advanced through fundraising, development, and leadership positions before ultimately becoming Executive Director and later President.
As she reflects on her tenure, Patti believes her greatest contribution has not been a program or initiative. It has been helping build a culture where people genuinely feel they belong.
Whether interacting with scholars, families, staff members, volunteers, or board members, her philosophy has remained consistent: lead with kindness, lead with care, and create meaningful human connections.
The Science Behind Caring for People
As Patti's leadership responsibilities grew, she became increasingly interested in understanding why certain cultures thrive while others struggle.
That curiosity led her to pursue advanced studies in Positive Psychology, where she explored topics such as human flourishing, well-being, resilience, and what helps people reach their full potential.
One concept became especially meaningful to her: mattering.
According to Patti, people want to know two things. They want to know they are valued, and they want to know they are contributing value.
That belief now influences how she approaches leadership, coaching, education, and organizational development.
Small actions often have the biggest impact. A handwritten birthday card. A thoughtful conversation. Remembering what someone is going through. These moments help people feel seen, appreciated, and connected.
The Three Cs: Cared For, Capable, and Connected
One of Patti's proudest accomplishments is helping develop Buffalo Prep's culture framework built around three core principles:
Cared For
Creating an environment where individuals feel valued, supported, and respected.
Capable
Helping people develop confidence, autonomy, and belief in their abilities.
Connected
Building meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging within a larger community.
These principles guide employee development, scholar support, leadership practices, and organizational decision-making throughout Buffalo Prep.
Patti believes these elements are no longer optional. In a world where burnout, stress, and isolation continue to impact workplaces and communities, organizations must intentionally invest in human well-being.
For her, culture is not a perk. It is a necessity.
The Next Chapter: C3 Community
While continuing to support Buffalo Prep through leadership transition efforts, Patti is also focusing on the next phase of her work through C3 Community, a venture she co-founded with longtime Buffalo Prep leader Dr. Marcus Deveso.
The goal is simple: help organizations, schools, leaders, and individuals build environments where people can flourish.
Through leadership development, coaching, professional development, organizational consulting, and well-being initiatives, C3 Community brings the same principles that helped shape Buffalo Prep's culture into schools, nonprofits, businesses, and communities.
Patti also works one-on-one as a Positive Psychology Coach, helping individuals navigate career transitions, leadership challenges, personal growth, and moments when they simply feel stuck.
Her work centers on helping people identify their strengths, reconnect with purpose, and move forward with greater clarity.
A Legacy Built on Illuminating Brilliance
Throughout the conversation, one theme surfaced repeatedly: everyone possesses brilliance.
Patti believes success is not about creating talent. It is about helping people recognize and develop the strengths they already have.
That philosophy has guided Buffalo Prep's work with scholars for decades and continues to shape her leadership today.
As Buffalo Prep prepares for its next chapter and Patti embarks on a new one of her own, her focus remains unchanged: helping people feel cared for, capable, and connected.
Because when people feel they matter, extraordinary things become possible.
