Beyond the Numbers: Finding Clarity and Confidence with Christine Mathieu
By: Hilario Caro, Talent Optimization at StaffBuffalo
Money is often treated as a numbers game. Budgets, investments, and returns tend to take center stage. But what if the real challenge has nothing to do with numbers at all?
On this episode of the Pain Points Podcast, Lauren Lewis sits down with Christine Mathieu, B. Msc., CMC®, Wealth Coach and Certified Money Coach at Note Advisors, to explore the deeper relationship people have with money.
Through her own journey and decades of experience, Christine shares how fear, mindset, and life experiences shape the way we make financial decisions and how true clarity comes from understanding ourselves first.
From Financial Advisor to Transformational Coach
Christine spent more than 20 years as a financial advisor before realizing something was missing.
During the 2008 financial crisis, she saw firsthand that even when clients had solid financial plans, fear often overrode logic. People were making decisions based on emotion, not strategy.
That experience changed everything.
She began to recognize that financial planning alone was not enough. Clients needed help understanding their relationship with money, not just managing it.
This realization led her to transition into wealth coaching, where she focuses on the human side of financial decision-making.
Why Fear Drives Financial Decisions
One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is simple. Fear plays a larger role in money decisions than most people realize.
Even when people know they are financially secure, they may still feel anxious, uncertain, or stuck. These reactions often come from past experiences, not present reality.
Christine explains that most of our thinking happens subconsciously. That means our financial behaviors are often shaped by beliefs we are not even aware of.
Instead of trying to ignore those fears, her approach is to bring them to the surface.
By identifying the root cause, people can begin to shift how they think, feel, and act when it comes to money.
It’s Not Just About Money
A powerful theme throughout the conversation is that money is only one form of “currency.”
Time, energy, relationships, and even a sense of purpose all play a role in how fulfilled someone feels.
Christine shared that even individuals with significant financial success can struggle in other areas. For some, the challenge is stepping away from work. For others, it is finding balance or feeling a sense of purpose outside of their career.
The common thread is that the struggle is rarely about money itself. It is about what money represents.
When people begin to understand that, they can start making decisions that align more closely with what truly matters to them.
Awareness First, Then Action
Christine’s coaching process focuses on two key phases.
The first is awareness. This is where clients explore their beliefs, uncover patterns, and understand where their relationship with money comes from.
The second is transformation. This is where they begin to shift those patterns through intentional action and new ways of thinking.
It is not an overnight process. These patterns are often built over decades.
But with consistency and support, meaningful change becomes possible.
As Christine explains, the goal is not perfection, it is progress and a more peaceful relationship with money.
A Different Approach to Wealth
At Note Advisors, Christine works alongside financial planners who focus on the technical side of finances.
Her role is different. She helps clients understand what is driving their decisions behind the scenes.
Together, this creates a more complete approach. Clients receive both a strong financial strategy and the mindset support needed to follow through with confidence.
It is a combination that allows people to move forward with greater clarity, less fear, and a stronger sense of control over their future.
A New Way to Think About Money
Christine’s message is simple but powerful.
Money is not just about numbers. It is about how we think, what we believe, and how we see ourselves.
When people take the time to understand that relationship, they can begin to make decisions from a place of clarity instead of fear.
And that is where real transformation begins.
