Connection, Compassion, and Community Impact: Christina Pearl’s Journey at Horizon Health Services
By: Hilario Caro, Talent Optimization at StaffBuffalo
In this meaningful episode of the Pain Points Podcast, Lauren Lewis sits down with Christina Pearl, Corporate Director of Communications at Horizon Health Services, to explore her 15+ year journey with one of Western New York’s most impactful nonprofit organizations. Christina’s story is one of curiosity, courage, and deep commitment to community, showing how connection, advocacy, and thoughtful leadership can change lives.
Finding Purpose Through Service
Christina’s path wasn’t linear. After college, she returned to Buffalo with a business and marketing degree but no clear direction. Rather than waiting for the “perfect” job, she leaned into service joining committees, volunteering, and eventually serving on Horizon’s Board during the early days of the opioid epidemic.
That decision changed everything.
What started as a way to learn quickly became a calling. Christina fell in love with Horizon’s mission: providing mental health and substance use treatment, resources, and hope to people across Western New York. Her board service opened the door to a full-time role, first in accounts payable, then eventually into a newly created marketing and communications position she helped design herself.
Building a Communications Function from the Ground Up
When Christina stepped into her communications role in 2012, Horizon had no internal marketing department. The organization was growing rapidly, and leaders recognized the need for clearer communication - both externally and internally.
Christina became a department of one.
Over time, she built a full communications team and helped Horizon grow from roughly 200 employees to more than 900 today. Her work expanded far beyond branding. It focuses on internal culture, employee engagement, and empowering staff to be ambassadors for the mission.
Her philosophy was simple:
If your people don’t feel informed, supported, and connected, the message can’t truly reach the community.
Normalizing Mental Health Conversations
A central theme of Christina’s work has been breaking down stigma around mental health and substance use. From early campaigns like “Painkillers Kill” to ongoing outreach across schools, workplaces, and community organizations, she has helped put real faces and real stories behind difficult conversations.
Horizon now partners with:
Schools across multiple counties
Employers and HR teams
Community organizations and nonprofits
Families impacted by mental health and substance use
Through training, awareness campaigns, onsite counseling, and education, Horizon helps people recognize signs, start conversations, and seek help before crisis hits.
“Connection is everything,” Christina shared. “If people feel safe reaching out, they’re more likely to take that first step.”
Honoring Families, Building Legacy
One of the most powerful aspects of Christina’s role is working with families who have turned loss into lasting impact. Through foundations, memorial programs, and community events, these families help fund programming, facilities, and resources that support recovery and healing.
From family-focused spaces like Hillary’s House to wellness initiatives and campus improvements, Christina helps translate personal stories into meaningful action—ensuring loved ones are honored while creating hope for others.
“It’s a privilege to be trusted with these stories,” she said. “And an even bigger responsibility to make sure they lead to real change.”
The Power of Networking and Asking for Help
Christina is a passionate advocate for networking, mentorship, and community involvement—not just for career growth, but for personal fulfillment. She encourages professionals to:
Join boards or committees
Attend events outside their comfort zone
Build relationships before they need them
Ask for help and guidance early
Her own career is proof that showing up, staying curious, and being willing to learn can open doors you never expected.
“Connection creates opportunity,” she emphasized. “And Buffalo is an incredible place for that.”
A Mission That Extends Beyond the Office
Today, Horizon Health Services operates across multiple counties, offering outpatient, inpatient, residential, school-based, and telehealth services. As the organization celebrates 50 years of service, Christina remains focused on the future—meeting people where they are, expanding access, and strengthening partnerships across the region.
Her work reflects a simple truth:
strong communities are built when people feel seen, supported, and connected.
At StaffBuffalo, we share that belief. Christina Pearl’s story is a reminder that when communication is rooted in compassion and purpose, it becomes a powerful force for change.
